How To Read The Bible?
There isn’t a special way to read the Bible, but using the acrostic SOAPS is a helpful place to start.
Scripture: What is one verse through which God speaks to me? Write down the verse verbatim.
Observation: What is God saying to me through this passage? Write the verse down in your own words.
Application: What action step is this passage leading me to take?
Prayer: Talk with God about this passage and ask him to empower you to apply it to your life.
Share: Ask God, “Who do you want me to share this with?” Write down the person’s name with whom you will share.
How To Pray?
Prayer is simply a conversation with God, so there isn’t a special way to pray. When Jesus was asked how to pray by his disciples, he modeled prayer in what is now referred to as the Lord’s Prayer (Matt. 6:9-13).
A simple acrostic “PRAY” also captures the key elements of prayer that we see in the Lord’s prayer:
Praise God for who he is (ex. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name” (v. 9b)).
Repent of your sins and receive God’s forgiveness (ex. “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (v. 12)).
Ask God to move in the world and also provide what you need (ex. “Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.” (v. 10-11)).
Yield to God’s leading and deliverance (ex. “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” (v. 13)).
Whether we pray the Lord’s Prayer verbatim or use it as an outline as we pray, it is a great place to start.
